Florida Virtual School Online Learning Community

Florida Virtual School (FLVS)

User: K-12

Goal: Help schools around the country help their students succeed.

Challenge: With school moving online virtually overnight due to COVID-19, teachers, schools, parents, and students needed help.

Solution: Created an online hub of free educational resources for K-12 students, families, educators, administrators, and schools; contained videos, articles, infographics, webinars, reports about online learning; started an online group for teachers to ask questions, and get practical advice, and tips. All of the content came from our teachers and training staff. FLVS plans to keep its Online Learning Community updated and available as a resource.

Learning Impact: FLVS launched the Online Learning Community in less than 30 days to ensure students were able to continue their education. 14,341 visitors with many visiting multiple times; 32% of visitors were new to FLVS.net; 3,471 browsed live workshops and webinars that were organized by audience so the user could find information and resources relevant to them; and 2,375 clicks on facts about online education. As part of Florida's COVID response we ended up training over 2,000 teachers in the state and teachers in several other states requested support.

Educational Accessibility and Personalization

Magica11y from Magic EdTech

Magic EdTech

User: K-12, higher education

Goals: Alleviate the “spot check” approach to accessibility audits; remove dependencies on various tools and test content with a single, unified and automated test suite.

Challenges: Accessibility is an afterthought in learning product design and development. Time and cost are factors in extremely low (5-10%) accessibility testing rates.

Solution: A robust toolkit that harnesses the power of automation to detect accessibility gaps in learning products and suggest recommendations to bridge them.

Learning Impact: MagicA11y helps institutions alleviate issues of equity and access. It ensures that differently-abled students get better access to knowledge and information—and have an equivalent learning experience to their peers. MagicA11y allows institutions to evaluate compliance with WCAG guidelines and/or 508 standards without having to rely on their suppliers. In 2020, coverage of WCAG 2.0 AA guidelines was 42%, showing a savings of $275,000, which is expected to increase to 55% and over $1 million, respectively.
