ECoach at the University of Michigan
University of Michigan
User: Higher education
Goal: Provide tailored coaching at scale and timely feedback to students on how to succeed in a course.
Challenge: In large, introductory courses with hundreds of students, one-on-one interaction between instructors and students is difficult or even impossible.
Solution: Free, personalized coaching tool that helps bridge the communication gap between students and instructors to increase student motivation and engagement in the course. Uses knowledge of dozens of instructors, hundreds of students, and behavior change experts.
Learning Impact: ECoach has reached more than 23,000 students and 60% of all current undergraduate students at the University of Michigan. Multiple research studies (2014, 2018, 2021) have shown that students who use ECoach earn higher grades (up to a third of a letter grade, on average) than students who don’t and that students who use ECoach more earn higher grades than those who use it less. Students who use the Exam Playbook scored 3-4 percentage points higher on an exam. ECoach has also been designed to support large-scale educational research.
Digital Graduation Predictor and Virtual Counselor
Microsoft and Forsyth County Schools
Goal: Achieve a 100% graduation rate.
Challenge: District-wide need for a real-time way to recognize at-risk students and track progress toward graduation.
Solution: Data-driven Academic Virtual Assistant (AVA) built with tools from Microsoft and open standards (OneRoster with future plans for Caliper Analytics and CASE). AVA is tied into the district's data warehouse that has 10 years of student data.
Learning Impact: Tracking data for all 51,400+ students in Forsyth County Schools, AVA has eliminated the manual effort to identify and assist at-risk students, saving over $300,000 in staff resources and time. Counselors get a weekly email report of at-risk students that allows them to drill down for more detailed information, including the individual student's graduation map. Students can also see their data so they can take action. AVA uses a chatbox to talk to students and makes counseling available 24/7. Helped boost the 2020 graduation rate by 2 percentage points (increased from 94% to 96.14 percent). Past student data helps predict future student success; up to 97% accuracy about which students will graduate.
